Ulises’ Odyssey
7:53 min/Documentary Trailer

Writer/Director: Lorena Manríquez

Producers: Anita Modak-Truran, Ferrell Tadlock

Synopsis: I was 8 years old on September 11, 1973 when I heard planes flying low and saw violent images on television. It was a coup d’etat. That day saw the death of socialist president Salvador Allende and was the beginning of General Pinochet’s 17- year dictatorship. Uncle Ulises was a union leader and a member of a leftist party that supported Allende. My father was an army officer and supported Pinochet.

The coup sent Ulises on a long journey. After being smuggled in the Austrian Embassy, he and his family went to exile in Switzerland. My family was torn apart. Since then, I always wanted to know why. Thousands of Allende supporters were tortured and executed by Pinochet’s secret police. Ulises is a survivor. After 30 years Ulises returned to Chile and I’m telling his story.
